ADVANCING TEXTILE RECYCLING INNOVATION — DEVELOPING NEW GLOBAL RECYCLING SYSTEM

E

ON has developed EON.ID, the first global tagging system for textile recycling, advancing the circular economy for the entire fashion industry. EON.ID is a system for transforming old clothes into new garments — in a similar way to paper recycling. Today, nearly 90% of unwanted clothes in the United States end up in landfill. If we could instead take these clothes and turn them into new materials and garments, we could eliminate waste and reliance on new natural resources.

EON.ID provides a solution to one of the biggest barriers to textile recycling — the fact that we often don’t know what the clothes are made of. If we do not know the materials our clothes are made of, textile recycling can be impossible.

Sorting and separating our clothes by material type is an essential first step to being able to recycle them. EON.ID introduces a tagging system — that creates a digitized ‘ingredients list’ for each individual garment, giving recyclers all the information needed to recycle the garment.

ZERO WASTE PACKAGING

EON’s packaging (reusable garment bag) is made out of recycled PET plastic bottles, and is fully recyclable. Eon’s rental business model introduces a zero-waste packaging system as products are sent and returned in the same packaging, reused many times, and recycled after use. Today, containers and packaging account for 30% of all solid waste generated in the United States. With this percent expected to rise due to the increase in online packaging, innovation solutions for zero-waste packaging are essential for a truly sustainable business.

RECYCLED HANGERS

We use recycled hangers, use the same hangers for multiple shipments, and recycle all of our hangers at end of use. Each year 8-10 billion plastic or wire hangers are produced and sold, of that only an estimated 15% are recycled. We’re working to change that.
